You may not have heard of the Teal Pumpkin Project before, but you’ve likely seen them around your neighborhood at Halloween without realizing. This project aims to make Halloween a safe holiday for everyone, including children with food allergies, and this year Carolina Asthma & Allergy Center is hosting a giveaway to get our network involved.
We remain committed to educating the community about how difficult daily activities can be for those with allergies, and Halloween is no exception. Parents often have to check ingredient labels, throw out candy, and warn their allergic children about the potential dangers of this fun holiday. But the Teal Pumpkin Project is helping lessen that stress, and you can help by entering our giveaway.
Understanding Allergies
1 in 13 children have food allergies – and even more than that may have sensitivities or diseases that prevent them from eating certain foods. Intiatives like the Teal Pumpkin Project don’t just cater to one niche, they make life easier for a large percentage of children who experience these struggles.
Carolina Asthma & Allergy Center is here to help if you suspect your child has allergies or needs assistance managing their allergies. We have 15 locations that can examine, test, and treat your child to make navigating food allergies a breeze, even on Halloween.
The Teal Pumpkin Project
The Teal Pumpkin Project, developed by Food Allergy Research and Education (FARE), aims to address the challenges faced by children with food allergies on Halloween. To participate, simply place a Teal Pumpkin sign in your window or display a teal pumpkin on your front porch or steps.
By signaling to trick-or-treaters with a Teal Pumpkin, you show that, in addition to candy, your home offers non-food treats that are safe for everyone. Carolina Asthma & Allergy Center takes pride in its ongoing partnership with FARE for this initiative, and we provide free flyers to our clients. These flyers are readily accessible at our office locations or can be downloaded as a printable PDF, allowing you to demonstrate your commitment to an allergy-free Halloween in your neighborhood. You can find teal pumpkins for purchase at local retailers like Target or Walmart, or get creative and paint your own!
Allergy-Friendly Halloween
If you don’t win our giveaway, never fear! There are other ways you can participate in the Teal Pumpkin project at no or little cost. Download and print our Teal Pumpkin flyer for use in your home, or receive one for free at any of our 15 convenient office locations. If you’re already planning on purchasing Halloween candy, it may be smarter to select non-food treats, to ensure that everyone is satisfied by their visit to your doorstep.
Consider options like:

- Bracelets
- Pencil toppers
- Bouncy balls
- Other small toy items
Finally, remember that decorating your home with Teal Pumpkins is as easy as going to your local store and locating one, or painting it yourself. If you have a child with food allergies, it may be a fun activity for them to craft their very own Teal Pumpkin. Carolina Asthma & Allergy Center knows that all children should enjoy this time of year.
